On the Road: Gary, Indiana's The Brasserie

So it seems I’m going to allow my wanderlust to guide my spirit and just take me away to wherever the wind blows with a chill vibe, some reclaimed wood and wifi password in plain sight. Today the wind has blown me thusly to The Brasserie, a cafe/bar/lounge on Gary’s Lake St, a winding road that leads straight to the duneland shores of Lake Michigan after taking you on a tour of several boutiques, a theatre, an art center/gallery and an impressive mural of the Jackson 5. Now, I’m not gonna mislead you here, I’m a fan of towns in the early stages of rebuilding, so it doesn’t bother me that a lot of the shops on Lake St are boarded up, suffering from broken windows or are deeply seasonal. Yet that’s what pulled my eye to The Brasserie, with its modern and quaint storefront windows with classically French cafe lettering and year round open doors. And once you enter le sigh it's adorable! Chic gray walls, exposed wood beams, old timey industrial lights and a loft vibe that makes you wanna move-in and did I mention they serve beer, wine and meals? Yep! It's a perfect place for those of you who like me are always looking for a spot outside of the house to get some reading, writing or general musing on getting your life together done. A search I’m perpetually on because you know, the whole wanderlust thing, and having options like this is always great.

Driving up this artsy strip of Gary you can see and feel the spirit of rejuvenation and reinvention humming and hopefully as more visionary go-getters, wanting to revive and not invade, start taking root throughout the city, The Brasserie will cease being an anomaly, and take up the mantle of forebear. So, if you find yourself in Gary and in need of a Nutella cappuccino (highly recommend), or a local brew or vintage, be sure to stop through and take in the fertile landscape of possibilities around you.

Enjoy!
